If you're searching for a proposal location that's private, breathtaking, and a little different from the traditional winery setting, let me introduce you to one of Sonoma County's hidden gems: Bodega Lavender Farm.
Nestled in the rolling hills just minutes from the Sonoma Coast, this beautiful Airbnb feels like your own private slice of wine country. During lavender season, the property transforms into a sea of vibrant purple blooms, filling the air with the calming fragrance of lavender while offering panoramic views in every direction. It's peaceful, romantic, and one of the most beautiful places I've photographed a proposal.
One of the things I love most about photographing surprise proposals is helping create a plan that keeps everything completely secret.
For this proposal, we came up with a fun cover story. Instead of arriving as the photographer, I showed up pretending to be a flower delivery girl with a bouquet for the Airbnb. It gave me the perfect reason to be on the property without raising any suspicion.
Once I delivered the flowers, I quietly moved into position while the couple enjoyed the beautiful scenery. When the moment finally arrived, everything unfolded exactly as we had hoped. She was completely surprised, and I was able to capture every smile, every happy tear, and every genuine reaction from beginning to end.
Those authentic moments are always my favorite. They're impossible to recreate, and they're the memories couples treasure most.
Timing couldn't have been more perfect.
The lavender fields were at their peak, (which is June in Bodega Bay) creating a stunning backdrop unlike anything else in Sonoma County. Everywhere we turned there were beautiful rows of purple blooms, golden summer light, and sweeping views of the surrounding hills.
The property feels wonderfully secluded, making it ideal for couples who want an intimate proposal without crowds or distractions. Instead of worrying about people walking through the background, they were able to focus completely on each other.
One of the things that makes Bodega Lavender Farm so special is the variety of locations available without ever leaving the property.
After the proposal, we explored several different areas for their engagement portraits. Every few steps offered a completely new backdrop:
Lavender fields in full bloom
Rolling Sonoma County hills
Wide-open meadows
Rustic farm details
Beautiful countryside views
Soft golden-hour light
Cozy corners around the Airbnb
It felt like photographing at several different locations all in one evening.
While Sonoma and Napa are known for their incredible wineries, private properties like Bodega Lavender Farm offer something equally special, privacy.
Without visitors walking by or tasting room schedules to work around, couples can slow down and enjoy the moment together. The proposal feels incredibly personal, and afterward there's plenty of time to celebrate, explore the property, and soak in the excitement before heading out to dinner or opening a bottle of wine back at the Airbnb.
It's a wonderful option for couples planning a romantic weekend getaway on the Sonoma Coast.
If you're considering a proposal here, I highly recommend planning around lavender season, when the fields are bursting with color. The blooms, combined with the property's incredible views, create one of the most romantic settings in Northern California.
Whether you already have a vision or need help choosing the perfect location, timing the light, coordinating with the property, or creating a believable cover story (yes—even posing as a flower delivery person!), I'd love to help you plan a proposal that's completely unique to your relationship.
The best surprise proposals aren't just beautifully photographed—they're thoughtfully planned from beginning to end so you can focus on the one question that matters most.
If you're dreaming of a private, unforgettable proposal in Sonoma County, Bodega Lavender Farm is a location I'll happily recommend again and again.
I'd love to help you create—and capture—the moment you'll remember for the rest of your lives.
