Some proposals are quiet and intimate. Some proposals are grand and beautifully planned. And then there are proposals like Calvin and Andy's — floating above Napa Valley at sunrise in a hot air balloon, with the Napa Valley hills glowing below, a surprise sign waiting on the ground, and forty family members secretly gathered nearby to celebrate afterward.
This Napa Valley hot air balloon proposal was one of those stories that felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience from start to finish.
A 4 AM Wake-Up Call for a 6 AM Surprise
When Calvin first reached out about photographing his Napa Valley proposal, I knew right away this was going to be something special.
His plan was to propose during a sunrise hot air balloon ride with Aloft Hot Air Balloons in Napa Valley. That meant an early start — a very early start. I woke up at 4 AM so I could meet everyone before their 6 AM flight departure.
But because this was a surprise proposal, I could not exactly introduce myself as the proposal photographer.
So the wonderful team at Aloft gave me a jacket with their logo, and for the morning, I became a semi-official member of their marketing team. When I met Calvin and Andy near the balloon, they were told I was there to capture some updated marketing images for the company.
It was the perfect cover.
Andy had no reason to suspect that I was actually there for her.
The Proposal in the Sky
Once we were in the basket and the balloon lifted off, the morning became quiet in the most beautiful way.
Have you ever been in a hot air balloon over Napa Valley?
There is not much room.
It is peaceful and serene, but it is also a very cozy space, especially when you are trying to photograph one of the biggest moments in someone's life without giving away the surprise.
Just after takeoff, the Aloft team below rolled out a large "Will You Marry Me?" sign on the ground. Calvin gently pointed it out to Andy, and once she saw it, he dropped to one knee.
It was one of those Napa Valley proposal moments that felt both grand and incredibly intimate at the same time.
With a wide-angle lens, I was able to capture the full scene — Calvin down on one knee, Andy's reaction, the balloon basket, the sign below, and the sunrise beginning to light up Napa Valley around them.
And yes, she said yes.
Sunrise Over Napa Valley
After the proposal, we had time for celebration photos in the balloon basket. There were smiles, hugs, ring photos, and that just-engaged glow that is so fun to photograph.
Then, for a few minutes, we all got to simply take in the beauty of the morning.
The sunrise over the hills and valleys of Napa was breathtaking. The landscape felt soft, golden, and calm — the kind of view that makes you understand why couples choose Napa Valley proposals over and over again.
A hot air balloon ride over wine country is truly something everyone should experience at least once in their life.
It was peaceful. It was serene. It was beautiful.
And it was the perfect setting for a Napa Valley hot air balloon proposal.
Portraits After Landing
After we landed, we took a few more engagement-style portraits to document the excitement of the morning.
One of the best parts of photographing Napa Valley proposals is that the emotions are completely real. There is no pretending. No forced excitement. No need to recreate anything.
The joy is already there.
After the balloon ride, we continued with a quick portrait session around Yountville, which should absolutely be on your must-visit list if you are planning a Napa Valley proposal or engagement session. It has that charming wine country feel with beautiful restaurants, walkable streets, and so many pretty places for photos.
Calvin and Andy looked so happy and relaxed, and it was the perfect way to end the first part of their proposal morning.
But Calvin was not done yet.
One More Surprise
After we parted ways, Calvin had one more surprise planned for Andy.
He had arranged a private lunch at a nearby restaurant with about forty of their closest family members.
Andy had no idea.
When they arrived, their parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even one very special grandma were all waiting to celebrate with them.
It was such a sweet continuation of the day — from a private Napa Valley hot air balloon proposal to a joyful celebration surrounded by family.
I was able to document the moment Andy walked in, the shock on her face, the hugs, the happy tears, and the excitement of sharing the news with the people who love them most.
That is one of my favorite things about photographing Napa Valley proposals. The proposal itself is the big moment, but the celebration afterward often holds just as much emotion.
Did Andy Know?
When Andy was asked later if she knew the proposal was happening, she admitted she had a hunch.
In fact, she had such a strong feeling that she wore a dress under her outfit just in case.
And honestly? That might be one of my favorite details of the whole story.
Because even when someone suspects a proposal may be coming, the moment still feels magical. The planning, the setting, the words, the surprise family gathering — all of those details still create a memory that cannot be fully imagined ahead of time.
Planning a Hot Air Balloon Proposal in Napa Valley
A Napa Valley hot air balloon proposal is such a beautiful idea for couples who love adventure, travel, wine country, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
It is also a proposal that requires extra planning.
You have to think through timing, weather, transportation, where the photographer will be, how to keep the proposal a surprise, and what happens afterward.
That is where having a Napa Valley proposal photographer who can help with the logistics makes such a difference.
For Calvin and Andy's proposal, the surprise worked because every detail had been thought through ahead of time — from my "marketing team" cover story to the timing of the sign rollout to the portraits afterward and the family lunch that followed.
The result was a proposal that felt smooth, emotional, and completely personal.
A Napa Proposal to Remember
Calvin and Andy's hot air balloon proposal was one of those mornings I will never forget.
It began before sunrise, lifted into the sky over Napa Valley, included one of the sweetest surprise proposals, continued with portraits in Yountville, and ended with a room full of family waiting to celebrate.
It was thoughtful, romantic, peaceful, and full of joy.
Calvin did not just plan a proposal.
He created an experience.
And for Andy, it became a story she will get to tell forever.
