A Romantic Elusa Winery Proposal at Four Seasons Napa Valley Max & Sarah

Couple walking together through the vineyard at Elusa Winery in Calistoga

When Max first reached out to me, he knew one thing for certain: Sarah loved Napa Valley and wineries, and he wanted to give her a proposal that felt completely unforgettable.

There was just one challenge—he had never been to Napa.

He was planning everything from Chicago and envisioned flying into California for a romantic wine-country weekend, proposing privately on the first day, and then surprising Sarah with another celebration afterward.

That is exactly the kind of proposal I love helping plan.

For Max and Sarah, Elusa Winery at Four Seasons Resort Napa Valley in Calistoga gave us the perfect setting: vineyards, beautiful wine-country scenery, privacy and an experience that still felt natural enough that Sarah wouldn't suspect what was about to happen.

And, most importantly, Max could concentrate on asking the question instead of worrying about where to stand, when to arrive or whether I would be able to capture the moment.

Planning a Napa Valley Proposal From Chicago

One of the first things Max told me was that he had never been to Napa Valley.

That's actually very common with the proposals I photograph.

Many of my couples are traveling to Napa or Sonoma for a special weekend, which means the person proposing is trying to choose a location, understand driving times, coordinate winery reservations and figure out where the photographer can hide, all from hundreds or even thousands of miles away.

My job begins well before I pick up my camera.

We talked through Max's vision, the type of setting Sarah would love and how the proposal could fit naturally into their Napa Valley weekend.

He wanted something scenic and romantic, but he also wanted the actual proposal to remain intimate, just the two of them.

Elusa Winery was a beautiful fit.

Why Elusa Winery Is Such a Special Napa Valley Proposal Location

Elusa Winery sits on the grounds of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley in Calistoga, surrounded by vineyards and views of the Palisades.

Unlike arriving at a separate proposal location where your partner might immediately realize something unusual is happening, a winery experience gives you a built-in reason to be there.

You can arrive for what feels like a beautiful Napa Valley wine experience and let the proposal unfold naturally.

Elusa even offers proposal experiences with options that can include a private vineyard setting, wine, florals and other romantic touches. For couples worried about weather, the winery also has an indoor Wine Library overlooking the barrel room.

That flexibility is one of the reasons I love locations like this for surprise proposals.

What Max & Sarah's Elusa Winery Proposal Looked Like

The goal was to keep everything relaxed.

Sarah thought they were simply enjoying the beginning of their Napa Valley getaway together.

Meanwhile, Max and I had already worked through the details so he knew where he needed to go and I knew exactly where I needed to be.

That planning matters.

For a surprise proposal, I don't want you walking around wondering:

Is this the spot?

Where is the photographer?

Should I do it now?

Those are the things we figure out ahead of time.

When the moment arrived, Max was able to focus completely on Sarah.

He asked.

She said yes.

And suddenly this trip to wine country became the weekend they would always remember as the beginning of their engagement.

After giving them a few minutes to actually enjoy what had just happened, we transitioned into portraits together around the property.

Those first photographs after a proposal are some of my favorites to create because there is almost no posing required. There is so much genuine emotion—laughing, looking at the ring, hugging each other and that slightly surreal realization of, We're engaged.

Should You Propose Before or After Your Wine Tasting?

If you're considering an Elusa Winery proposal, this is something I would plan strategically rather than leaving to chance.

In most cases, I prefer photographing the proposal toward the beginning of the experience.

Why?

Because the person proposing doesn't have to spend an entire tasting nervously waiting for the right moment.

And once the proposal happens, you get to celebrate.

You can toast with a glass of wine, enjoy your tasting and actually be present with one another without keeping a secret.

The exact timing, however, depends on your reservation, the season, the light and where on the property we plan to photograph.

What Time of Year Is Best for a Napa Valley Winery Proposal?

Max originally considered August, September or October—and all three can be beautiful times to propose in Napa Valley.

Late summer brings warm weather and full vineyards. As Napa moves into September and October, you enter harvest season and the vines and landscape begin changing.

Four Seasons describes its vineyard as an organically farmed working vineyard, so the scenery naturally looks different throughout the year—from spring growth and summer veraison to autumn harvest and winter dormancy.

There isn't one single "best" month.

The better question is:

What do you want your Napa Valley proposal to feel like?

If lush vineyard scenery is important to you, summer into early fall is wonderful. If you'd rather have softer temperatures or a quieter feel, another season may suit your plans better.

Your photography time of day is also extremely important. The prettiest location at noon may photograph completely differently later in the afternoon, so lighting is something I consider when helping my proposal clients build their plans.

Can a Napa Proposal Still Be a Surprise?

Absolutely.

Max's proposal is a perfect example.

Sarah knew they were traveling to Napa Valley. She knew wineries would be part of the trip.

What she didn't know was that Max had been quietly planning something much bigger.

The easiest surprise proposals are often built around something your partner would already expect you to do.

If she loves wine, book a winery.

If she loves beautiful restaurants, build the proposal around dinner.

If Napa Valley is already somewhere she has wanted to visit, let the trip itself become part of the cover story.

You don't necessarily need an elaborate excuse.

You need a believable plan.

Make the Proposal Part of a Weekend, Not Just One Moment

One of my favorite things about Max's plan was that he wasn't thinking only about the five minutes surrounding the proposal.

He was creating an entire experience.

The first day was intentionally about the two of them: arriving in wine country, enjoying Napa Valley together and having their private proposal.

The following day would bring another surprise—family, wine country and time to celebrate the fact that they were officially engaged.

I'll share that part of Max and Sarah's weekend separately because it deserves its own story.

For couples traveling to Napa or Sonoma to get engaged, this is something worth considering.

You can keep the proposal intimate and still include the people you love in the celebration afterward.

Planning an Elusa Winery Proposal at Four Seasons Napa Valley

If you're thinking about proposing at Elusa Winery, here are a few things I recommend planning in advance:

Contact Elusa about the proposal itself. Proposal experiences and private areas should be coordinated directly with the winery.

Think about photography before choosing your exact time. Light can make a significant difference in vineyard photographs.

Have a clear meeting and positioning plan. You should know exactly where you're going and where I will be before the proposal happens.

Build in portrait time afterward. Don't rush straight into the next reservation. Give yourselves some time to enjoy being newly engaged.

Have a weather backup. One advantage of Elusa is the availability of beautiful indoor winery spaces in addition to its vineyard setting.

And finally, don't feel as though you have to figure all of this out yourself—especially if you've never visited Napa Valley before.

That's where I come in.

FAQs About Proposing at Elusa Winery

Where is Elusa Winery?

Elusa Winery is located at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley in Calistoga, California, at the northern end of Napa Valley.

Can you propose at Elusa Winery?

Yes. Elusa offers winery proposal experiences and can help coordinate private settings and special touches for the occasion.

Can I hire a photographer for an Elusa Winery proposal?

Yes. Photography can be incorporated into a proposal plan, but I recommend coordinating with both the winery and your photographer ahead of time so everyone understands the timing and location.

Is Elusa Winery good for a surprise proposal?

It can be an especially natural choice because a wine tasting or winery visit provides a believable reason to arrive dressed nicely and visit a beautiful part of the property without immediately revealing the surprise.

What happens after the proposal?

I typically give my couples a few moments to enjoy the experience privately and then photograph newly engaged portraits together. Depending on your plans, you can continue with your tasting, dinner or the rest of your Napa Valley celebration afterward.

Looking for a Napa Valley Proposal Photographer?

If you're dreaming about proposing in Napa Valley but you're not sure where to begin, you don't need to have every detail figured out before reaching out.

In fact, Max didn't.

He came to me with a girlfriend who loved Napa, a general vision for a romantic wine-country weekend and a very important question he wanted to ask.

From there, we turned the idea into a plan.

I photograph surprise proposals throughout Napa and Sonoma wine country and help my clients think through the location, timing, lighting, photography logistics and flow of the experience so that when the moment arrives, there's only one thing left for you to do:

Ask.

Planning a proposal at Elusa Winery, Four Seasons Napa Valley or another Napa or Sonoma winery? I'd love to hear what you're envisioning and help you create a plan that feels like the two of you.
